The LinkedIn Import Button Is Grey: Here's How to Fix It

Step-by-step troubleshooting for when the Recruiterflow Chrome Extension import button turns grey or stops responding on LinkedIn profiles.

Written by Amogh Balikai

When the import button in the Recruiterflow Chrome Extension turns grey or stops responding on a LinkedIn profile, it almost always comes down to one of a few fixable causes. Work through these steps in order, most people are unblocked by step 3 or 4.

Step 1: Make sure you're on a supported page

The import button only activates when you're on an individual LinkedIn profile page, not a search results page, or recruiter project list.

If you clicked a profile from a search results panel and it's loading in a sidebar, wait for the full profile to load or open it in a new tab before trying to import.

Step 2: Refresh the LinkedIn page

The extension doesn't always detect a page correctly on first load. Refresh the LinkedIn profile page and try the import again before doing anything else.

Step 3: Clear your browser cache

A stale cache is the single most common cause of a persistently grey import button.

  1. In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear Browsing Data.

  2. Set the time range to Last 24 hours.

  3. Check Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.

  4. Click Clear data.

  5. Log back into LinkedIn and try the import again.

Step 4: Sign out and back into LinkedIn

The extension reads your active LinkedIn session to import profile data. If that session is stale or partially expired, imports can fail silently.

  1. Sign out of LinkedIn completely.

  2. Close and reopen Chrome.

  3. Sign back into LinkedIn.

  4. Navigate to a profile and try importing again.

Step 5: Test in an incognito tab

This rules out a conflict with another Chrome extension. The most common cause when the above steps don't help.

  1. Open a new Incognito window (Cmd+Shift+N on Mac / Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows).

  2. Go to chrome://extensions/ and make sure the Recruiterflow extension is allowed in incognito.

  3. Log into LinkedIn in the incognito tab.

  4. Open a LinkedIn profile and try to import.

If the import works in incognito but not in your regular Chrome window, another extension is interfering. Try disabling your other extensions one at a time to find the conflict.

Step 6: Reinstall the Recruiterflow extension

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/.

  2. Find Recruiterflow and click Remove.

  3. Reinstall from the Chrome Web Store.

  4. Log into Recruiterflow in the extension.

  5. Navigate to a LinkedIn profile and try the import.

LinkedIn Classic vs. Sales Navigator: why one works and the other doesn't

If imports work on Sales Navigator but not LinkedIn Classic (or vice versa), this is typically caused by a recent change to LinkedIn's page structure that temporarily breaks detection on one surface. The extension detects profile data differently on each surface, so an update to one doesn't always affect the other.

This type of issue is resolved through an extension update. If you're on the latest extension version and imports are consistently broken on only one LinkedIn surface, contact support and specify which surface is affected. This helps the team identify and fix it faster.

Still not working?

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, email help@recruiterflow.com with the following:

  • Your Chrome version (Chrome menu → Help → About Google Chrome)

  • Your Recruiterflow extension version (chrome://extensions → Recruiterflow → Details)

  • Which LinkedIn surface the issue occurs on (Classic, Sales Navigator, or both)

  • A screen recording showing the grey button behavior

This information lets the support team reproduce the issue on their end and escalate to engineering if needed.
