Fixing "Failed to Load PDF Document" Errors in Chrome

If PDFs won't open inside Recruiterflow in Chrome, a single browser setting is usually the cause — here's how to fix it in under a minute.

If you see a "Failed to Load PDF Document" error when trying to open a resume or attachment inside Recruiterflow, the problem is almost always a Chrome setting that's telling the browser to download PDFs instead of displaying them.

The Fix

  1. In Chrome, navigate to chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments and press Enter.

  2. Set the toggle to Open PDFs in Chrome (not "Download PDFs").

  3. Reload the Recruiterflow page — the PDF should now open inline.

Still Not Working?

If the PDF still won't load after changing the setting, try these:

  • Hard refresh the page: Press Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) to clear the cached version.

  • Try a different browser: Recruiterflow works with Firefox, Safari, and Edge. If the PDF loads there, the issue is Chrome-specific.

  • Disable PDF-related extensions: Some Chrome extensions (PDF editors, annotators) intercept PDF rendering. Disable them temporarily and retry.

  • Check if the file itself is corrupted: If only one specific resume fails to open, the file may be damaged. Ask the candidate to re-upload it.

Things to Know

  • This setting is per-browser and per-device. If a team member has the same issue, they'll need to update the setting on their own machine.

  • Chrome occasionally resets this setting after major browser updates. If the error reappears after a Chrome update, check the setting again.

  • This fix applies to resumes, job attachments, and any other PDFs opened inline within Recruiterflow.
